Background of the Study
Cooperative societies play a crucial role in economic development and community empowerment, and women's involvement in these organizations is essential for promoting gender equity. In Oron Local Government Area, cooperative societies provide a platform for women to engage in economic activities, access financial resources, and build social networks (Etuk, 2023). Recent studies conducted between 2023 and 2025 indicate that women's participation in cooperatives has the potential to transform economic dynamics and contribute to poverty reduction (Obong, 2024). However, various challenges, including limited access to capital, educational barriers, and traditional gender roles, continue to restrict full participation (Akanim, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the extent and impact of women's involvement in cooperative societies, examining how these organizations can serve as vehicles for economic empowerment and social change. By analyzing membership patterns, management structures, and socio-economic outcomes, the research seeks to provide insights into enhancing women's participation and effectiveness in cooperatives. The study's findings are expected to inform policy interventions and capacity-building initiatives aimed at increasing women's economic empowerment through cooperative societies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of cooperative societies, women's involvement in these organizations in Oron remains limited due to systemic barriers (Etuk, 2023). Factors such as limited access to financial resources, educational disparities, and entrenched gender roles hinder full participation and leadership opportunities (Obong, 2024). This underrepresentation restricts the potential of cooperatives as catalysts for women's economic empowerment and community development (Akanim, 2025). This study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges to propose strategies for enhancing women's involvement in cooperative societies.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the current level of women's involvement in cooperative societies in Oron.
To identify barriers hindering full participation of women in cooperatives.
To recommend strategies for enhancing women's economic empowerment through cooperatives.
Research Questions:
What is the extent of women's involvement in cooperative societies in Oron?
What barriers limit women's participation and leadership in cooperatives?
What measures can enhance women's economic empowerment through these organizations?
Research Hypotheses:
Women's involvement in cooperatives is significantly lower than men's.
Systemic barriers negatively affect women's participation in cooperative societies.
Targeted interventions can improve women's involvement and leadership in cooperatives.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates women's involvement in cooperative societies, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for economic empowerment. The findings will inform policy and capacity-building initiatives, contributing to enhanced participation and leadership of women. By addressing systemic barriers, the study supports the development of more inclusive cooperative structures that foster community development and gender equity.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Cooperative Societies: Member-based organizations that operate for mutual economic benefit.
Economic Empowerment: The process of increasing the economic strength and self-reliance of individuals.
